About Consequence

To proceed to know the meaning of the term consequence, it is necessary to discover, in the first place, what is the etymological origin of it. In this case we can state that it is a word that derives from the Latin “consequi” and that it is the result of the sum of three clearly differentiated parts:
-The prefix “with”, which means “together”.
-The verb “sequi”, which is synonymous with “follow”.

Consequence is that which is the result or effect of something prior. There is a correspondence between the consequence and the fact that generates it.

For example: “As a consequence of the economic crisis, the company announced that it will lay off two hundred workers”, “The young woman suffered a blow to the head as a result of the crash”, “The deputy’s strong statements had immediate consequences: two of her colleagues they announced their resignation from the block ”.

It can be said that almost all the actions of the human being have some kind of consequence, since they are followed by something that was influenced by the original act. If a person eats five hamburgers for lunch and then suffers indigestion, this discomfort is a consequence of the food eaten.

A man who commits a crime, on the other hand, can be sentenced to prison : the punishment is a consequence of his action. The subject would not have ended up in jail if he had acted in accordance with the provisions of the legal limits.

In the same way, we can establish the existence of what are known as unforeseen consequences. This is a term used to refer, as the name suggests, to unexpected results.
Specifically, the existence of three types of these consequences is exposed:
-The unforeseen and negative ones.
-The unexpected and positive, which is what is also known by the name of serendipity.
-The perverse, which are those that are totally contrary to the expected result.

In the field of philosophy, consequence is called the relationship that exists between a proposition that is deduced from one or more premises and said premises, in such a way that, when the premises are denied or affirmed, their denial or affirmation is unavoidable..

Let’s look at a case:

Premise No. 1: France is a European country.
Premise # 2: Michel Platini was born in France.
Conclusion: Michel Platini was born in Europe.

As can be seen, there is a logical consequence between the conclusion and the two preceding premises: if France is in Europe and Platini was born in France, the conclusion derived from these statements is that Platini was born in Europe.

Within the musical field, it must be stated that the term at hand has been used a lot. A good example of this is that the singer Enrique Bunbury, former leader of the group Héroes del silencio, used that word to title his album number six. Specifically, this one is called “The Consequences”, it was published in 2010 and managed to sell more than 40,000 copies.

Some of his most significant songs are “Frente a Frente” or “El boxer”. In addition, that album also included the singer’s collaboration with the artist Miren Iza, vocalist of the band Tulsa.
