Meaning of Advertisement

Announcement is the act and consequence of announcing. This verb (announce), on the other hand, refers to making known some type of data or information. For example: “The president surprised with his announcement about the tax reform”, “The hiring of the new reinforcement is already confirmed: the club will make the official announcement tomorrow”, “Without any previous announcement, the company closed its central branch”.

The various state agencies, civil associations, commercial companies and other entities frequently make announcements to spread their news. In this way, when you want to inform the community of any event, announcements are made publicly. The mayor of a city, to cite a case, can call a press conference to announce the name of the new secretary of Tourism for the town. In a similar sense, a non-governmental organization may organize an event in a plaza to announce the search for volunteers for a campaign.

It is important to note that although this concept also takes place in everyday life, outside the corporate or governmental sphere, in popular language we do not usually use the term advertisement in this context, but we resort to others or even constructions that allow us to express the same in a less formal way. For example, instead of saying “Carla has announced to us that she will move” we would probably use the verb count or we would say “Carla has given us the news: she will move”.

In ancient texts, especially those belonging to different religious beliefs, the meaning given to this term is “darker” than the current one, in that it takes on a nuance of omen, divination or prophecy. The weight of the concept in these cases comes from its relationship with imminent events such as death or the arrival of a fatal plague, which a gifted person reports as a warning, so that others can prepare and face them.

An announcement is also called a medium that allows the transmission of a message for advertising purposes. In this case, advertisement is a term that is equivalent to advertising or, according to the context, to advertising.

Newspapers and magazines often feature graphic ads from their sponsors: companies pay the media to promote their products and services in those ads. On television, the ads are audiovisual, while on the radio they are aural. Finally, in digital publications, there may be graphic, audio, audiovisual or even interactive advertisements.

Advertisements have been necessary for the livelihood of the media for decades, although the public does not always perceive their usefulness at a glance. Many times, users complain about this tactic, and there are now several ways to circumvent it to jump directly to content. However, the people who are actually interested in the ads and decide to buy the products displayed there are millions, and this is why this monetary investment by companies is justified.

Nowadays it is very easy to publish ads to sell those items that we no longer use, to offer certain services such as private classes or specialized labor, or to rent a property. Thanks to the competition, there are many platforms for this purpose, which offer a free basic option. Users who want to improve the positioning of their ads, on the other hand, do have to pay, although these are not exaggerated sums.

Similarly, an advertisement can be used to request a service, to repair a product, to look for work or a home. As can be seen, modernity has pushed the meaning of the term advertisement to the limit, since in this case it does not seem so appropriate.
